Welcome to CMASA
Club Management Association of Southern Africa (CMASA) is the representative body for the Recreation and Sports Club sector in South Africa. CMASA offers members access to information on international and local best practice material relating to the management of their clubs as well as current information on trends in this sector.
CMASA is committed to ongoing professional development for Management and Staff in the club sector and offers ongoing education programmes to suit all disciplines of employees.
CMASA's strength is heightened by the expertise of its elected Executive Committee and management team, who collectively have in excess of 150 years in club management.
Club management in South Africa and internationally is no longer a hobby but a profession and clubs require a paradigm shift in the application of sound business principles to sustain the sector. CMASA is able to offer these resources to assist clubs in this paradigm shift.
Gary Geddes - Chairman
Gary is currently the GM of Durban Country Club. He was previously the CEO of Ruimsig Country Club and had held this position for the last 6 years.
He recently attended the BMI Review Course in April to take the exam for the Certified Club Manager (CCM) designation which is the hallmark of professionalism in club management is a valuable and widely-respected mark of a manager's commitment to professional development and the club industry. Gary is still in the process of completing the requirements for this designation. Gary is has played golf for the past 35 years.
Brenden Fourie - Vice Chairman
Brenden was educated at Selborne College in East London and he completed a BA (Ed) Human Movement Science degree at the University of Port Elizabeth where after he returned to Selborne College as a teacher between 1993 - 1999. He played provincial cricket for Border from 1988 - 2001 and also had various stints playing and coaching in England between 1994 - 2005. He is currently the GM at East London Golf Club and has been in the position for 9 years.
Janyne Marais - General Manager
Janyne holds an International Diploma in Advertising & Marketing from the AAA School of Advertising and has over the years gained valuable experience in the industry, having worked for Compleat Golfer Magazine; Dale Hayes Golf Events and the PGA of South Africa first as Marketing Consultant, then as General Manager and held the position of Business Development Director of the PGA of SA before moving into her own consultancy business - Sports Guru.
In 2013 she joined Glendower in order to gain further insights into club operations. Janyne has high energy levels and is continuously working at finding better and more efficient ways of dealing with new challenges. In May 2015 Janyne took over the reigns from Beryl Acres as General Manager of CMASA and we are excited with the prospects that lie ahead as she continues to develop CMASA.
Paul Leishman completed a National Diploma in Hotel Management through the Wits Hotel School. He has been in the club industry for 20 years. He spent 6 years as GM at Crown Mines Golf Club, 14 months opening The World of Golf, at Glendower as General Manager for 9 years and is currently General Manager at Bryanston Country Club.He has served CMASA for a total of 12 years, three of which he was Chairman of CMASA. Paul has attained his CCM designation
Immigrating from Zimbabwe in 1980 and entering the commercial sector where he worked as an industrial engineer for Gencor, was production and technical director for Glodina Textiles and then owned a business and managed a small group of companies.
He has been in club management for 8 years after being headhunted and joined Modderfontein Golf Club as the G.M. and then moving to his current position of General Manager at Umhlali Country Club & Golf Estate KZN.
Sue Smith's career in Finance has spanned some 25 years. She was at Crown Mines for 2 years before moving to Cape Town to work at Boschenmeer Golf Club. Approached by Erinvale Golf Club, she was the Financial Manager there for 5 years. She is currently Financial Manager at Steenberg Estate for both the Golf Club and Homeowners Association. She has served on the CMASA Executive committee since 2006. Sue has attained her CCM designation
Sandra is the General Manager of George Golf Club since 2010. She completed a certificate in Contemporary Club Management from EIAH as well as her CCM through CMASA and CMAA, Georgia State University. She further completed a certificate from Cape Peninsula University of Technology in Turfgrass Management.
Ian has 45 years’ experience in Industry, Golf Club and Estate management and Estate consulting. Ian developed the Compleat Golfer Five Star experience Program and managed the process for 3 years. He also wrote and published over 30 articles on golf club management in the Golf Club Management magazine. Ian is currently the General Manager of Elements Private Golf Reserve.
Hans embarked on his management journey at the early age of 24. He graduated from the PGA of SA in 2014 whilst working at Centurion Country Club as the Assistant Professional for four years. He was then approached by Mount Edgecombe Country Club and became the PGA Professional and Shop Manager for one year. Hans is currently the General Manager of Centurion Country Club and contributes a different dynamic to the Executive Committee of CMASA.
Dave Gleeson is the current Club Manager of Paarl Golf Club in the Western Cape. Dave has been employed in the Golf industry for the past 8 years, having been the General Manager at Westlake Golf Club from April 2010. Dave has a B Compt degree from Unisa and completed 5 years of Accounting articles in 1991. He served on the committee of Rondebosch Golf Club from 1998 and was the Club Captain for 2003 and 2004.
