CMASA 2019 - Year in Review

2019 was certainly a busy and rewarding year for CMASA and our Member Clubs.
Here’s highlights of the successes that we achieved:

The Club Foundation

CMASA launched the Club Foundation in April 2019 by hosting a Golf Day to raise funds at Bryanston Country Club. We raised a fantastic amount of R90 000 – and we are grateful to all that contributed to this important Foundation.

The Club Foundation seeks to promote transformation and fund the life cycle of employees working within the club industry, to assist them in achieving their career goals. The Club Foundation hopes to provide funding for the following key areas;

  • Student education

  • Employee Development

  • Club Manager’s Career Development

  • CMASA regional workshops

The Club Foundation’s role is to create a donor base of constituents that seek to further the knowledge and skills of those individuals that operate clubs of all types.
The mission of The Club Foundation is to raise funds to financially support the professional development of people employed in the club through education, training and research initiatives. Transformation in the Club Industry is essential and as such, priority will be given to candidates of colour.
As funds grow, we will be able to offer more benefits.

Current Trustees : Janyne Marais, Dale Hayes and Paul Leishman

CMASA Partners

CMASA has over the past four years accelerated its relationship with a number of partners. These collaborations have come in various forms which have been targeted for the ultimate benefit of Clubs.

Jonas, SAB, Nedbank, Louis57 Wines and Club Recruitment have been stalwarts of our partner programme and we are thrilled to welcome our new partners;

  • First National Bank – Gold Partners
  • GolfGuys - Green Partners
  • Matkovich Golf Course Maintenance – Preferred Suppliers

CMASA along with RCA Consulting launched the new CMASA Awards process in September 2019.

The CMASA Club of the Year Award recognises and acknowledges THE ENTIRE CLUB and its team of staff, rather than individuals.

We believe that this new awards process meets the requirements of objectivity, independent, fair assessment and holds much credibility for all clubs to be measured against.

CMASA is committed to our Mission statement which is:

To serve our members in every possible way and enable them to improve their own professional standards in the management, financial control, productivity, service and efficiency of their clubs through ongoing education and best practice.

We are thrilled that Jonas has continued their amazing support of our CMASA Awards and have committed to sponsor R50 000 to the winning club. Jonas has stipulated that this prize money is to be reinvested back into the club and used specifically for training of staff at the club.

‘Badges of Distinction’ will be awarded to the clubs that score highly in each of the seven pillars. This will allow us to highlight and acknowledge the excellent work these clubs have done.

The seven pillars are;

  1. Benchmarking & Finance
  2. Education & Training
  3. Legal Compliance
  4. Environmental
  5. Transformation
  6. Member Survey & Guest Experience
  7. Communication & Participation

We have ten clubs participating in this year’s Awards and the winning club will be announced in January 2020.

CMASA Learning Portal

CMASA launched the affordable online training & education portal in September 2020. Five clubs have already signed up and are receiving benefit from the specifically developed modules for CMASA member clubs.

The CLUB INDUSTRY training portal has relevant and applicable educational modules that will impart knowledge and skills for you and your staff to raise the standards of delivery for your members and guests.

  • Creating a user-friendly resource and platform for growth specific to the needs of the club environment.
  • To allow for learning without the logistical challenge of getting all staff into a room at a given time.
  • To create individual accountability around learning. (Individual learning journey tracked through the system)
  • To identify the individuals within the club environment who are serious about developing themselves and the club they work for.
  • 1 CPD point will be allocated for every module that is completed

12 Managers from various clubs in South Africa participated in the powerful BMI GM/COO Concept programme hosted at Centurion Country Club from 13th May 2019 to 17th May 2019. BMI General Manager/Chief Operating Officer introduces and expounds upon the GM/COO Concept. The aim of this course was for the delegates to learn how to operate a club as a business and be perceived as its leader. Understanding the responsibilities and characteristics of a true GM/COO in order to review the competency areas required to achieve the success they desire.

CMASA was also instrumental in offering workshops over the year covering;

  • Colour Accounting
  • MID Workshop
  • Governance
  • GEO Environmental Sustainability
  • Labour Updates
  • Jonas User Groups
  • POPI Workshop

With Clubs emerging as medium to large sized business, it is important to keep abreast of all the latest legal requirements necessary for best practice and good governance. The CMASA workshops are practical sessions, focusing on providing Clubs with action plans to implement in their own environments. The work is far from over and CMASA has already set out dates for training and education in 2020. Be sure to take part in these worthwhile sessions and network with your peers.

CATHSSETA - CMASA Grant Funded Learnerships

CMASA, alongside Dionysus - SDI Training, is currently facilitating CATHSSETA grant funded Learnerships in Gauteng. These learnerships are;

  • Food & Beverage Learnership
  • Hospitality Receptions Learnership

We have 18 learners from different clubs in Gauteng currently enrolled in these learnerships, which cost R24 000.00 per learner, at no cost to the Clubs as they are funded from the grants.

Listen to Godfrey Mutshinye from CCJ, to hear how the F&B Learnership have benefited him.

These Learnerships are integrated and comprehensive learning programmes that lead to a qualification registered on the National qualifications Framework.

The Learnerships are one-year programmes completed through a combination of block release (knowledge attainment and skills development). Each month the Learners have also attended one week of theory and skills training with the training provider.

CMASA’s Annual Conference

It was our biggest one yet! Two action packed days of education, information sharing and networking between a vested group of 143 delegates, consisting of CEO’s, General Managers, club employees, committee members and industry stakeholders working in the club industry in South Africa and abroad, took place at CMASA’s annual conference.

“I am so proud of how CMASA has grown! It is now professionally run and provides us, as inspiring industry professionals, to develop our skill sets and grow our passion for what we do, so that we can successfully lead our clubs into the future.”- Damien Wrigley, General Manager, Pearl Valley.

We are extremely proud of this year’s event. Not only was it a success in terms of education, training and networking, it was also the first of many “Environmentally Friendly” CMASA Conference. Below are the initiatives we took, alongside Houghton Golf Club and GEO OnCourse, to ensure our 2019 Annual Conference was a sustainable one, hopefully setting the trend for many future events in the industry.

Don’t forget the 2020 Conference Challenge!

We challenge every club that attended this year, to bring another club that has not attended the past two conferences i.e. 2018/2019 to the 2020 conference, and the GM/CEO will receive a 50% discount on their delegate fee. Further details to follow in due course.

Benchmarking and Surveys

CMASA, and GBAS (Club Benchmarking) deliver two very important surveys namely, SALARY REVIEW and OPERATIONAL REPORT.

These surveys are designed to provide Clubs with comparative data to assist them with strategic planning, budgeting and benchmarking. In addition to these surveys, GBAS has developed an industry service via their club benchmarking platform, to support clubs in their quest for improved performance and to better understand their own operations.

The platform is available in South Africa for subscription by CMASA members. The annual fee for subscription is R6 500.00 per annum.

Benefits of subscribing include:

  • It provides a platform that allows Managers to elevate FACT over OPINION
  • Empowers CEO/GENERAL MANAGERS and their Boards to become properly equipped to focus on Strategic matters
  • 24/7 ACCESS to key performance indicators and reports
  • Powerful FILTERING TOOLS to allow control over the comparison sets
  • Ability to access financial & operational performances of other Clubs.
  • Benchmarking provides context to your club’s data
  • Knowledge is what makes the great clubs great.
  • Benchmarking is also not just about knowledge for only the CEO’s/GM’s, but knowledge for your department heads – the future industry leaders.

As requested by GBAS, please advise them directly of your desire to subscribe by sending an email to

Another year has gone, and I am sure you all agree with me, what a busy and challenging year it has been.

CMASA continues to grow as a brand and is without doubt the leader in educating and furthering the career of employees within the Club industry. Not only does CMASA educate, but also continuously guides Clubs in areas of Human Relations, Legal Compliance, Health & Safety, Membership Marketing, Environmental Compliance, and Best Practices and Good Governance.

The image of CMASA has grown, and today we occupy state of the art offices at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club and remain an integral part of the precinct that promotes golf throughout the Country.
